Tata Motors European Technical Centre to showcase new Tata Bolt EV concept at LCV2016 - a competitive, affordable EV with class-leading technology

Tata Motors European Technical Centre PLC (TMETC) is continuing its pioneering research and product development into electric vehicles (EVs) with the launch of the Tata Bolt EV concept, a self-funded project that is an EV variant of the Tata Bolt being built by parent company Tata Motors Ltd since 2014.

The Tata Bolt EV utilises a liquid-cooled 80 kW drive motor developing 240 Nm of torque. It has a single speed gearbox at a 9.59:1 ratio.

TMETC has a strong history of developing EVs, taking part in many self-funded and collaborative projects since the company’s foundation in 2005.

In 2009, TMETC joined a consortium of 12 organisations in the CABLED project, the West Midlands’ bid to Innovate UK’s (formerly the Technology Strategy Board) competition for ultra-low carbon demonstrator vehicles.

Twenty-five Tata Vista EVs were supplied for the trial, clocking over 300,000 miles on public roads during the 12-month trial period. This resulted in significant knowledge derived on the behaviour and durability of the key EV drivetrain components and systems, with the results being generally a pleasant surprise for such new technologies.

TMETC was also instrumental in the successful adaptation of the existing Tata Ace light commercial vehicle in 2009-2012. With a new low volume production facility commissioned, the first build vehicles of the Tata Ace EV were completed in 2012 and extensive market testing through a demonstration programme with end users was delivered.

The company’s EV and hybrid capabilities will further be developed as it looks forward to the completion of its new home, the National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC), in 2017. The NAIC, located on the University of Warwick campus, will bring together three industry-leading companies - TMETC, Jaguar Land Rover and WMG - to create and develop novel automotive technologies.

A selection of other EV material will also be displayed by TMETC at LCV2016.
